with great power comes great responsibility-- stan lee
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
or maybe you prefer the adage, power corrupts?
both views have a solid hold in the BERMUDA. our story began in 1756, with a young man named Timothy Ames. Timothy was blessed with the power to influence chance and as his power grew, so did his hunger. seeing the things he was able to do, Timothy became convinced that his magic gave him the right to take control of the island. but he couldn't do it alone.
Timothy Ames found a kindred spirit in Astrid Sebastian. they met and quickly fell in love, marrying in 1771. Astrid understood Timothy's views and shared many of them. why would they have been given these powers if they weren't entitled to use them for their own gain? and so our first coven was born. these two families decided to work together to reap the ultimate reward. complete control of the Bermuda Isle.
in 1775, as the Ames plotted to gain power, Tabitha Blakewood received a vision of the future. It was a future filled with corruption and pain, a future where the Ames coven held all the cards and used these advantages to subdue all other witches living on the island. Tabitha knew she had to stop this vision from coming true. With the help of her best friend, Elizabeth Wainwright, she cursed Timothy Ames and Astrid Sebastian in an effort to stop their plot. And thus the battle lines were drawn.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nearly two and a half centuries have passed since the battle began, and it still rages on. Over the years, the Kelseys have joined forces with the Ames alliance. and the Proctors have allied themselves with the Blakewood families.
And so, here's all you need to know: the good guys? Check the Blakewoods, and the Proctors. The Ames and Kelsey covens have only been known for their naughty tendencies.

the marked
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The source of magic has always been a question that plagues witches. It pre-dates the Bermuda, it even pre-dates written history. For all we know, magic has been around since the beginning of humanity, maybe even the world. Hell, maybe even since the Big Bang. For every fact about magic that is understood, there are at least ten unknowns.
Recently, an Ames witch was working with Bermuda University on a research trip in the Black Forest of Germany. There, she uncovered an ancient text. She brought this manuscript home and began to translate it. The knowledge held within will change the entire island.
This tome, called "Gaining Power" details the intricacies of magic to a degree never before seen. Mainly, it speaks of the magic of covens. Every coven shares a common pool of power. As new witches are born and undergo their Initiation, the coven's pool of power grows. This increase of power is largely unfelt by the members of the coven because the new witch is tapping into it as well. So if their was a way to increase a coven's number without increasing the number of witches, every witch in that coven would experience a growth in power.
"Gaining Power" describes a ritual that can be used to "mark" a mortal as part of your coven. Initiating a mortal into your coven does not make them a witch, therefore they cannot use magic.
The Repercussions It seems perfect in theory. But these marked mortals are not left unaffected. If the ritual occurrs under a full moon, the mortal is transformed into a familiar. These familiars are not the simple house pets of myth. Familiars are more like weres. They are able to transform into an animal. Under a full moon, they are unable to fight the change. Which animal the mortal transforms into depends on their personality. This gives rise to werewolves, werepanthers, werebears, etc. Familiars' strength, speed and senses are of super-human proportions, even in their human form. However, they have the same weaknesses as humans.
If the ritual occurs on the night of a New Moon, the mortal is transformed into a vampire. These vampires are similar to those of legend, but vary in different ways. First and foremost, they can go out in the sun though it does weaken them. They have reflections and will eventually die of natural causes, though they do have an increased lifespan. They do feed on human blood and have the ability to mesmerize humans in order to prey on them. But for the most part, they are human in everyway. That is, until they feed on a witch.
Witch's blood grants vampires increased strength, speed and agility. It also makes them nearly invincible. The only way to kill a vampire that has fed on witch's blood is a wooden stake through the heart or decapitation. Burning seems to work pretty well too.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And thus, our poor mortals find themselves to be a hot commodity nowadays. Every coven is scrambling to recruit as many mortals as possible since the more mortals you have, the more power you have.
With these new "species" there are even more warriors to partake in the battles to come. How they will contribute to the war is up to you.
