The witches of the Bermuda Isle are the main players in the war. They are basically humans with one large difference: they can use magic. Each witch is able to cast spells and brew potions in order to change the world around them. In addition to these common powers, every witch has a unique ability, which varies depending on their coven. For more information about how they recieve this power, see our powers thread.
Witches are the most powerful beings on the Bermuda. For example, if a witch and vampire got into a fight, the witch would most likely win. Of course, there's always a chance they'll lose.

familiars

Familiars are mortals who have been marked by a coven under a full moon. Familiars feel a strong loyalty to the coven that marked them. It is a magical bond that overpowers any personal feelings they may have towards the members of that coven. That's not to say they'll be the best of friends, but they will fight to protect "their" witches from others.
Familiars are stronger and faster than regular mortals. Their defining power is the ability to change into a particular animal . Usually this animal is a large predator but other animals are possible. Which animal the familiar turns into depends on the personality of the mortal. Usually they are named for that animal, using the term were to denote that they are a familiar (werewolf, weretiger, etc.).
A familiars power grows and diminishes with the stages of the moon. They are at their strongest the day of a full moon and weakest under the new moon. They are able to shift at will, except on the nights mentioned above. They cannot shift under a new moon and a full moon forces them to take animal form.

vampires

If a mortal is marked on the night of a new moon, they will become a vampire. Our vampires here on the Bermuda are a little different from your traditional vamp. They can walk in the sun, though it is a little irritating, like having a hangover. They have reflections and will eventually die of old age. They don't age at the same rate as a normal human being though. They can eat regular food and aren't any stronger or faster than your average Joe or Jane for the most part.
Vampires' powers are mostly mental. They are able to mesmerize humans, familiars and the occassional unsuspecting witch. They do feed on blood, which results in their increased longevity. They can be killed like any other human. What really turns them into a killing maching is feeding on witch's blood. Witch blood grants vampires superhuman strength, speed and agility. It also makes them nearly impossible to kill. The only way to bring about a vamp's demise when they are full on witchy blood is to stab them in the heart with a wooden stake, cut off their head or burn them.
Unlike familiars, whose power is regulated by the moon, a vampire's power fluctuates with their diet. If they have not fed on blood for a while, they will be extremely weak and it will be difficult for them to properly hypnotize anyone. When they are full, their power is at its highest. Vampires are loyal to their own coven, but not to the degree that a familiar is. Their inherent blood lust insures that in tough times, even the witch that made them is fair game.

These are your average, everyday human beings. They are just like you and me, so unless you're hiding something from the rest of the world, they have no powers. Don't let their lack of power fool you though, it's a lot of fun to play a mortal, especially in this environment. And if you get bored of being normal, you can always try to join a coven and become a familiar or vampire.
Mortals are the only species that can become a vamp or familiar. That means ABSOLUTELY NO UBER VAMP/WERE/WITCH HYBRIDS!!
